Granada during winter

Visiting Granada during winter and holiday season

Most visitors to Andalusia consider Granada not worth visiting during the winter season, but with the festive holidays, New Years and celebrations into the New Year, there’s a lot to do and see in the city. Also, without the mass of tourists that visit during the peak season, you can practically have most of Granada and the main tourist areas to yourself to enjoy and wander. Of course the Alhambra should still be booked in advanced since that is the number one tourist destination, you’ll find many things to enjoy here during the holiday season. I love touring the city in the off season and Granada to me is more appealing in winter without the massive crowds and tourists visiting this historic city.

With regional food specialties to enjoy, delicious wines and so many wonderful restaurants to choose from, you’ll definitely enjoy all the culinary delights of the city from lunch, tapa time frame to an exceptional dining experience.

The weather in Granada can be quite cold in winter which is both good and bad. The regular temperatures in the area range from 6 to 11ºC (41 to 51ºF). During the winter season, the coldest month is January and frosts on the ground and surrounding area are very frequent in December, January, and February. Snow up in the nearby mountains off the Sierra Nevada, make Granada a popular base to explore and enjoy snow, skiing up in the mountain ranges.

The city’s contrasting climate, with very cold months in winter and very hot months in summer, means that the best time to travel to Granada is either in spring or autumn which are the peak seasons. The advantage of visiting during the winter season is the lower crowds of tourists and having more time to enjoy the whole city.

Despite the colder outdoor temperatures Granada has a lot of daylight hours even in winter and throughout the year. But if you are looking for more milder temperatures to enjoy the city and be outdoors then choosing the spring and fall season tends to the be the most popular times to visit the city.
