Located in the heart of the old city center the Abastos de Cadiz is an iconic treasure and shopping venue for everyday Cadiz shoppers and visitors alike. A visit to the Abastos def Cadiz is a must if you really want to experience the heart and soul of local foods, fresh fruits and vegetables, local dishes, seafood and anything delicious in the city
For those that do not want to prepare anything, you can also dine around the many eateries, cafes and specialty food purveyors that sell regional prepared foods and finished goods for sale. I love to visit this market and just absorb the many stalls, mostly fish market and other food vendors in this active and lively space.

A Brief History of Cádiz’s Central Market de Abastos
Cádiz’s Mercado Central de Abastos, located in Plaza de la Libertad, has been an important part of the city’s daily life for nearly two centuries. Its history began in 1837, when the city decided to build a permanent food market on the former gardens of the Franciscan Descalzos convent. Designed from plans by architect Torcuato Benjumeda, the neoclassical market was inaugurated in 1838, featuring a rectangular layout surrounded by an elegant Doric colonnade and 72 original stalls. As Cádiz grew, the market was substantially remodeled between 1926 and 1929 under architect Juan Talavera, adding covered central pavilions for fish, meat, and other food products. A major modern renovation between 2007 and 2009 preserved the historic structure while creating a more spacious and contemporary market.
