A little history to Essaouira

A little history about the Medina of Essaouira

The Medina of Essaouira, located on Morocco’s Atlantic coast, has a rich and fascinating history that reflects its blend of African, European, and Arab influences. Originally known as Mogador, the area has been inhabited since ancient times and served as a key Phoenician and later Portuguese trading post due to its strategic coastal position. In the 18th century, Sultan Sidi Mohammed ben Abdallah founded the modern city of Essaouira (then called Mogador) in 1764, designing it as a fortified port to open Morocco to international trade while maintaining control over European merchants. The Medina’s unique layout, with its grid-like streets — unusual in traditional Islamic cities — was inspired by European military architecture. Over the centuries, Essaouira became a vibrant hub for commerce, art, and culture, and today its well-preserved Medina is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its harmonious blend of Moroccan and European architectural styles.
