Ourika Valley Waterfalls

Explore the Ourika Valley Waterfalls

I was looking for a day trip to explore Ourika Valley Waterfalls and Atlas Mountains from Marrakesh. It was easy and inexpensive to take a guided tour to explore the mountain areas, attractions, viewpoints and have a nice lunch at the Ourika waterfalls. This day tour experience in the Ourika Valley is fun and carefree with all the details and itinerary handled by the tour group. I’ll share some of the different tour guide options below which I think is an easy way to explore the area.

The only negative point is that you are part of the tour and itinerary, so you have to adhere to the tour schedule and complete itinerary for the days trip.

There’s still plenty of time to explore many of the seven falls of the Ourika Valley once you have arrived. There are guides that do the hike or you can do a self tour and see how many you can actually do before heading back to the river area below.

What is the Ourika Valley and why visit

The Ourika Valley is a lush and scenic valley located about 30 kilometers (less than an hour’s drive) southeast of Marrakesh, in the foothills of the High Atlas Mountains. It’s one of the most popular day-trip destinations from the city, offering a refreshing contrast to Marrakesh’s busy streets with its cool mountain air, terraced fields, and Berber villages that cling to the hillsides.

You’ll find a mix of nature, culture, and adventure here — from visiting traditional Berber homes and local markets to hiking along the river toward the Setti Fatma waterfalls. The valley is also known for its locally made argan oil cooperatives, colorful roadside cafes by the river, and the chance to experience rural Moroccan life at a relaxed pace.

It’s a great escape for those who want to see another side of Morocco — one that’s green, peaceful, and deeply connected to the land. Visiting the Ourika Valley gives you a glimpse of authentic mountain life without traveling too far from Marrakesh.

Start your day with an early departure from Marrakech to make the most of the trip. The first stop included a visit to a pottery studio showcasing the local crafts and ceramics works done on the premises. It’s a great time for a bathroom break but to also see the local handicrafts created in the area.

The drive to the Ourika Valley is scenic, with stunning views of the Atlas Mountains along the way. Your first stop is the women’s argan oil cooperative, where you’ll learn about the traditional methods used to extract this valuable oil. You can also sample argan products and discover their many uses.

Coffee stop and views

There typically is a coffee stop along the way with nice views and a place to photograph the landscape or have a quick snack. This is typically a quick break before heading to the riverside areas of Sti Fatma. There’s might even be a few pit stops for picture taking depending on the time frame and request from visitors to stop and take more photo visits.

Visit to the village of Sti Fatma

Continue on to the village of Sti Fatma, the gateway to the seven waterfalls of the Ourika Valley. Take some time to explore the colorful local markets and stands or enjoy a coffee before starting your journey. The hike to the waterfalls offers stunning views of the valley, lush vegetation, and small streams. There are a series of waterfalls that continue uphill and gets more strenuous the further you hike uphill.  While the first waterfall is relatively easy to reach, exploring requires a little more effort and sturdy shoes. Don’t rush yourself there is plenty to see and if it gets to slippery or difficult, there’s no problem just heading back to the riverside area and then enjoy a nice meal.

Lunch time on the riverside

Lunch time on the riverside

This is definitely the highlight to visiting Ourika with a nice leisurely lunch. After your hike, return to the village and enjoy a leisurely lunch at a riverside restaurant. Traditional Moroccan dishes like tagines, couscous, and fresh salads are common, accompanied by refreshing mint tea.

Strolling musicians visiting the sites make it a memorable experience as well as dipping your feet into the icy cold waters or wading as deep as you dare.

In the afternoon, you can spend some time relaxing by the river

In the afternoon, you can spend some time relaxing by the river, exploring the village, or visiting a Berber house for tea and learning about local culture and traditions. As the day comes to an end, you can enjoy a quiet drive to Marrakech and enjoy the peaceful scenery.

Tip – note where your guide is parking the van and the departure times so there’s no confusion or last-minute scrambling to find your group if you want to explore the town or riverside areas on your own. The guide will keep a lookout but only if you know where the driver is parked so make sure you inform your guide if you want to explore for a little bit and check out some souvenir stands.

Note – Some tours will rotate the timeframe of eating and doing the hike afterwards depending on the time spent exploring the various sites prior to reaching Sti Fatma area.
